The Story
A South African international student, Akhule, falls in love with a local Minnesota girl, Marie, but when they leave the bubble of their university life, and travel to his hometown together, they are faced with cultural and lifestyle disagreements that rock them out of their comfort zones.
The Locations
Our film is as much a love story about two people- as it is a love letter to two places:
Minnesota and Cape Town
The locations serve not only as setting but as a commentary on our leading characters: the polarity of their differences and the beauty of their similarities.
Akhule and Marie navigate the ins and outs of a bi-racial, cross-cultural relationship in this romantic drama. Akhule, having moved to Minnesota from Cape Town for University, takes a leap of faith to build a life in Minnesota with Marie.
They are happily moved in together after graduation, finding jobs and furnishing an apartment when they decide to travel to Cape Town to meet Akhule’s family. During their trip Akhule feels pulled to move back home. He feels happier in Cape Town, more himself, and he isn’t willing to leave again.
Their love is tested when Marie is presented with the decision to leave everything she knows behind for this new place, and totally new culture, in order to be with Akhule.
